Homemade King Hawaiian Rolls or Loaf

by Faty

This recipe for Homemade King Hawaiian Rolls or loaf brings the sweet, soft, and slightly tropical flavor of the famous rolls right to your kitchen. With the addition of pineapple juice and a hint of vanilla, these rolls are perfect for sandwiches, holiday dinners, or just as a delicious snack.

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups all-purpose flour (divided in half), plus an additional 1/2 cup if needed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups pineapple juice (room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup sugar (or Splenda for a lower-sugar option)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 packets yeast (0.25 oz each)
  • 1/2 cup butter (melted, 8 tablespoons)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Egg Mixture:
In a small bowl, beat the eggs. Add the pineapple juice, sugar, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Mix well until fully combined.
  2. Start Mixing the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, place 3 cups of the all-purpose flour. Gradually stir in the egg mixture until everything is well incorporated.
  3. Add Yeast and Remaining Flour:
Sprinkle in the yeast packets, one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Then, gradually add the remaining 3 cups of flour and mix. If the dough becomes too difficult to stir with a spoon, use your hands to combine the ingredients. Make sure all the flour is fully incorporated.
  4. Check Dough Texture:
The dough should feel tacky but not overly sticky. If the dough feels too wet, sprinkle in extra flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the right consistency.
  5. Let the Dough Rise:
Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and place it in a warm spot to rise for 1 hour. The dough should nearly double in size.
  6. Knead the Dough:
Once risen, remove the dough from the bowl and knead it on a floured surface, incorporating the additional 1/2 cup of flour. Knead about 10-15 times, ensuring the dough is smooth and elastic.
  7. Shape the Dough:
Form the dough into either rolls or loaves. If making rolls, divide the dough into 24 portions and roll them into balls. For loaves, divide the dough in half and shape it to fit buttered loaf pans. Place the dough in buttered pans and cover again with a towel.
  8. Second Rise:
Let the dough rise in a warm place. If making rolls, allow it to rise for 1 hour. If making loaves, let the dough rise for about 90 minutes until doubled in size.
  9. Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls or loaves for 25-30 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  10. Brush with Butter and Serve:
Once baked, brush the tops with melted butter for extra richness. Serve warm for the best taste.

Tips:

  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the dough a day in advance, allow it to rise, and then refrigerate it. Bring it to room temperature before the second rise and baking.
  • Add a Twist: For extra sweetness, sprinkle the tops with a little sugar before baking.
  • Storing Leftovers: Store any leftover rolls in an airtight container or wrap the loaves well. They freeze beautifully and can be reheated in the oven.

These Homemade King Hawaiian Rolls or Loaf are soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet—perfect for any occasion!
