Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Chocolate Components

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped (for ganache)
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Mix until the batter is smooth.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water; the batter will be thin, but that’s okay!
  • Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips for extra melty goodness.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.
  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  • For the ganache, heat the heavy cream in a saucepan until it begins to simmer. Then, pour it over the chopped dark chocolate and let it sit for a few minutes before stirring until smooth.
  • Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread chocolate ganache on top before adding the second layer. Pour more ganache over the top and sides of the cake.
  • Slice, serve, and watch everyone smile with delight!

Notes

For best results, use high-quality cocoa powder and chocolate. Make sure your eggs are at room temperature for a smoother batter.
