Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large 13×9-inch baking pan and set aside.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the self-rising flour and granulated sugar. Set aside.
Step 3: In a medium saucepan, melt 1 cup of butter and stir in ⅓ cup cocoa powder and 1 cup of coffee. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Once boiling, remove from heat.
Step 4: Pour the hot chocolate mixture over the flour and sugar combination. Use a hand-held mixer on medium speed to blend until thoroughly incorporated.
Step 5: Crack in the eggs and pour in the buttermilk. Beat the mixture for about a minute until it’s smooth and well combined.
Step 6: Transfer the batter to the prepared baking pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Step 7: While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In the same saucepan, combine ¼ cup butter, 3 tablespoons cocoa, and 4 tablespoons buttermilk. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until you achieve your desired consistency.
Step 8: Once the cake is done and slightly cooled, spread or pour the warm frosting over the top. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and chopped pecans while the frosting is still warm so they melt slightly into the cake.
Step 9: Just before serving, drizzle with caramel sauce for that perfect gooey finish.
Notes
This decadent cake is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. It’s perfect for festive occasions, family gatherings, or simply when you need a deliciously comforting treat.
