Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie Cutters

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup Shortening
  • 2 cups Granulated Sugar
  • 4 large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 4 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

Instructions

  • Cream the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, a little at a time, mixing as you go until everything is well combined and forms a soft dough.
  • Chill the Dough: Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. This helps firm up the dough, making it easier to roll out and cut into shapes.
  • Roll and Cut: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once chilled, take about half of the dough and roll it out on a well-floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut the dough into your desired shapes.
  • Bake: Place the cut-out shapes on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each cookie. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are slightly golden.
  • Cool and Serve: Once baked, allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy them as-is or sprinkle a bit of powdered sugar on top for extra sweetness.

Notes

For a fluffier cookie, you can add a tablespoon of milk to the dough before chilling. Try adding a teaspoon of lemon or almond extract for a slight twist on flavor. You can frost or glaze the cookies once cooled, or simply enjoy them plain as the traditional recipe suggests.
