Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, about 8 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
Return the skillet to low heat and stir in the tomato sauce, salt, black pepper, ground cumin, paprika, dried oregano, garlic powder, and onion powder. Simmer for 2 minutes.
Spread the beef mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the beef.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes until the tater tots are golden and the beef mixture bubbles at the edges.
Remove the casserole and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the tater tots. Return to the oven and bake another 10–15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes, then top with optional toppings and serve warm.
Notes
This casserole is hearty on its own, but pairs well with a crisp green salad or steamed broccoli.
