Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Baking Dish

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey

Vegetables

  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cups chopped green cabbage

Grains

  • 1.5 cups cooked white rice

Canned Goods

  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained

Spices

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • to taste salt and pepper

Cheese

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef (or turkey) and diced onion until the meat is browned and fully cooked. If there’s any excess fat, drain it off.
  • Season the mixture with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper, ensuring everything is well combined.
  • Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook for an additional 5 to 7 minutes, letting it soften a bit.
  • Add in the cooked rice, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes (juices included). Mix everything well to incorporate all those fantastic flavors.
  • Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  • Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, remove the foil, sprinkle with shredded cheese (if using), and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until hot and bubbly.
  • Let the casserole sit for a few minutes before serving—it allows the flavors to meld beautifully!

Notes

Substitute ground beef with turkey or a plant-based option. Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months. Great with crusty bread or sour cream on top.
