Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Baking Dish

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 0.5 medium yellow or sweet onion, diced
  • 0.5 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup ketchup
  • 1.5 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 8-ounce package sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 30-ounce package frozen tater tots (about 2/3 of the bag)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and bell pepper over medium heat until beef is cooked and vegetables are soft. Drain excess grease.
  • Add tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and pepper. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, then remove from heat.
  • Spread meat mixture in the baking dish and top with a little more than half of the shredded cheese.
  • Arrange tater tots in a single layer over the cheese, then sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  • Bake uncovered for about 25 minutes, or until tots are golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Notes

You can use ground turkey instead of beef, or add extra vegetables like corn or mushrooms for added nutrition. Reheat leftovers in the oven to keep the tater tots crispy.
