Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Mixing Bowl

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced

Sauces and Seasonings

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (for marinade)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil, divided

Vegetables

  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Garnishes

  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the thinly sliced steak with cornstarch and 2 tablespoons soy sauce. Toss well to coat and let it marinate for about 15 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the sauce ingredients: 1/4 cup soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, sugar, and water. Stir until well combined.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated steak and sear for about 3 to 4 minutes until browned.
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining sesame oil. Add the sliced onion, red bell pepper, and green bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2 minutes, then add garlic and ginger. Stir-fry for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Return the beef to the skillet, pour in the prepared sauce, and stir to combine. Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  • Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.
  • Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently to avoid toughening the steak.
