Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Dish

Ingredients

Key Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced 1-inch thick
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for topping)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  • Arrange the sliced French bread in a greased baking dish. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, ensuring that each slice is soaked. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit for a few minutes. Sprinkle additional granulated sugar over the top of the bread.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try substituting whole milk with heavy cream. Use day-old bread for better absorption. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days or freeze for up to a month. Reheat in an oven or toaster oven to maintain crispness.
