Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Pan

Ingredients

Yeast Mixture

  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 cup warm water

Dough Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup hot milk
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 4 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted (for brushing rolls)

Instructions

  • Dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until it becomes foamy.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sugar, softened butter, and salt. Pour in the hot milk and stir until the butter melts and everything is blended well. Let this cool to lukewarm.
  • Add the yeast mixture and the lightly beaten egg to the bowl. Stir until combined.
  • Gradually add the sifted flour, a cup at a time, mixing thoroughly until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 to 7 minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 15 to 18 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a roll and arrange them in a greased baking pan.
  • Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 to 45 minutes, or until puffy.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the rolls for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they’re golden brown.
  • Brush the fresh-baked rolls with melted butter for an extra-soft, shiny finish.

Notes

These rolls are perfect for pairing with any main course or enjoyed with butter and jam.
