Ingredients

Bread

  • 16 ounces brioche bread, sliced Cut into 1-2” cubes

Custard Mixture

  • 6 large eggs Beaten
  • 2.25 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter Cut into cubes

Instructions

  • Step 1: Place the cubed brioche bread into the bottom of a greased slow cooker.
  • Step 2: In a bowl, combine the beaten eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Pour this mixture over the bread, pressing down to ensure all bread is submerged in the liquid.
  • Step 3: Cover and place the slow cooker insert into the refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour, or overnight, to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  • Step 4: Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the soaked bread and dot with butter cubes.
  • Step 5: Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 1-2 hours or on low for 2-4 hours, until the egg mixture is fully cooked and the top is slightly golden.
  • Step 6: Serve the French toast casserole warm with maple syrup, fruit compote, or powdered sugar as desired.

Notes

This casserole is best served warm. You can top it with your favorite toppings like maple syrup, fresh fruits, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
