Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Pour melted butter into a 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
In a large bowl, whisk together milk, vanilla, and sugar.
Add flour, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Whisk until just combined.
Gently spoon the batter over the melted butter in the baking dish—do not stir.
In a small bowl, combine remaining 1/4 cup cocoa powder and brown sugar. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
Carefully pour hot water over the top. Do not stir.
Bake for 30–35 minutes until the top looks dry and set.
Let cool slightly before serving warm, ideally with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Do not stir the layers together before baking—this is what creates the gooey chocolate sauce underneath. For extra richness, add a pinch of espresso powder to the dry mix.
