Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20) or your preferred lean/fat ratio
  • 1/2 cup Yellow onion, finely diced
  • 8 oz Tomato sauce (one small can)
  • 1/4 cup Ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 8 slices Frozen garlic toast keep frozen until ready to bake
  • 1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese, packed

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and diced onion. Cook, breaking the beef up with a spatula, until the beef is fully browned and no pink remains and the onion is softened, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain any excess grease by tilting the pan carefully and using a spoon or pouring into a heatproof container.
  • Reduce heat to medium. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, yellow mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
  • Simmer the mixture gently for 4 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce reduces and thickens slightly. Taste and adjust seasoning with a pinch of salt and black pepper if needed.
  • While the sauce simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the frozen garlic toast slices on a baking sheet in a single layer—no need to thaw.
  • Spoon a generous scoop of the sloppy joe mixture onto each slice of garlic toast, spreading slightly but leaving a small border to prevent overflow.
  • Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of shredded cheddar cheese over each topped toast, covering the sloppy joe layer evenly.
  • Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the garlic toast is hot through and the cheese is fully melted and bubbling. For a golden top, switch to broil for 1 to 2 minutes watching carefully to prevent burning.
  • Serve immediately, hot from the oven, and enjoy the crunchy, cheesy goodness.

Notes

For extra depth, brown the onions until they’re a little caramelized before adding the tomato sauce.
