Ingredients
1lbGround beef (80/20)or your preferred lean/fat ratio
1/2cupYellow onion, finely diced
8ozTomato sauce(one small can)
1/4cupKetchup
1teaspoonYellow mustard
1tablespoonBrown sugar, packed
1teaspoonWorcestershire sauce
1teaspoonOnion powder
1teaspoonGarlic powder
8slicesFrozen garlic toastkeep frozen until ready to bake
1cupShredded cheddar cheese, packed
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and diced onion. Cook, breaking the beef up with a spatula, until the beef is fully browned and no pink remains and the onion is softened, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain any excess grease by tilting the pan carefully and using a spoon or pouring into a heatproof container.
Reduce heat to medium. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, yellow mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
Simmer the mixture gently for 4 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce reduces and thickens slightly. Taste and adjust seasoning with a pinch of salt and black pepper if needed.
While the sauce simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the frozen garlic toast slices on a baking sheet in a single layer—no need to thaw.
Spoon a generous scoop of the sloppy joe mixture onto each slice of garlic toast, spreading slightly but leaving a small border to prevent overflow.
Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of shredded cheddar cheese over each topped toast, covering the sloppy joe layer evenly.
Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the garlic toast is hot through and the cheese is fully melted and bubbling. For a golden top, switch to broil for 1 to 2 minutes watching carefully to prevent burning.
Serve immediately, hot from the oven, and enjoy the crunchy, cheesy goodness.
Notes
For extra depth, brown the onions until they’re a little caramelized before adding the tomato sauce.
