Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves until well combined.
In a large bowl, combine the applesauce, eggs, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until combined.
If desired, fold in walnuts or pecans.
Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan on a wire rack before frosting.
For the frosting, beat together the butter, cream cheese, cinnamon, and vanilla until fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar until smooth.
Spread the frosting over the cooled cake and chill slightly before serving.
Notes
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Can freeze slices for up to 2 months.
