Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Ramekins
  • Baking Pan
  • Fine-Mesh Sieve

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 4 large Eggs
  • 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 1/2 cups Milk, heated until warm
  • Nutmeg for sprinkling for added flavor

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla until everything is nicely combined.
  • Gradually add the warm milk to the egg mixture while stirring continuously.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a large measuring cup or bowl to make it smooth.
  • Pour the custard mixture into ramekins or a large custard dish.
  • Sprinkle the top lightly with nutmeg for added flavor.
  • Place the ramekins or dish into a baking pan. Fill the pan with hot water halfway up the sides of the custard container (this is called the water bath method).
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the custard is set but still jiggles slightly in the center.
  • Once done, carefully remove it from the oven and water bath. Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until it’s chilled.

Notes

Make sure your milk is warm but not boiling. This helps combine the ingredients better. Don’t forget to strain the mixture; this step is key to a smooth custard. Avoid opening the oven door while baking as this can change the temperature and affect the cooking time.
