1tspBaking SodaSift if clumped
0.5tspBaking Powder
1tspGround Cinnamon
0.5tspGround Nutmeg
Wet Ingredients
0.5cupsUnsweetened ApplesauceRoom temperature, can be homemade
0.5cupsGranulated Sugar
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan, or line it with parchment for easy removal. Set the pan aside while you mix the batter.
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk briefly to evenly distribute the leavening and spices.
In another bowl, mix the applesauce and granulated sugar until well combined. Stir for about 30 seconds.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any large air bubbles.
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs attached.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a cooling rack to finish cooling. Serve slightly warm or at room temperature.
Notes
For a richer cake, replace 2 tablespoons of applesauce with melted butter or oil. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
