Southern Fried Cabbage

This Southern Fried Cabbage is a comforting, flavorful side dish that’s easy to make and pairs perfectly with any meal. The combination of bacon and cabbage creates a savory delight that’s sure to please your family and friends!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large cabbage, chopped
  • 1 large onion, sliced into rings
  • 12 oz bacon, chopped
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup distilled vinegar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Vegetables:
    • Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces and slice the onion into rings.
  2. Cook the Bacon:
    • In a Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until it’s crispy.
    • Once cooked, remove the bacon and set it aside, leaving the grease in the pot.
  3. Add Oil:
    • Add the vegetable oil to the bacon grease in the Dutch oven.
  4. Fry the Cabbage and Onions:
    • Add the chopped cabbage and sliced onions to the pot.
    • Fry the mixture, tossing and turning it occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  5. Cook Down:
    • Continue to cook the cabbage until it’s tender and slightly browned in spots, about 1 hour.
  6. Season and Serve:
    • Once the cabbage is cooked down, add the distilled vinegar and mix well.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste, and stir in the cooked bacon.
    • Allow to cook for an additional 10 minutes before serving.

Tip: For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce for some heat! Enjoy your Southern Fried Cabbage as a side dish with cornbread or fried chicken.
